FAQ

Q. How much does it cost to play Call of Combat?

A. Nothing right now. Downloading and playing the game is free! We do ask that you make a donation of any size if you enjoy the game and help us grow.

Q. I've just downloaded the game but I don't know what im doing... HELP!

A. There is an excellent guide to help all of our new players; it can be found here. Even though it is quite lenghty, it will really help you get into the game and have some idea of what is going on.

Q. Sometimes my screen freezes mid game, and I don't know how to fix it.

A. Depending on what caused the freeze, it is possible to fix it. The easiest way is to simply minimize and maximizing the game window. If it doesn't work, click 'View' then 'reinitialize 3D graphics'. If neither worked, then there is a more serious error. Your computer may not have met the recommend computer specs. Feel free to post in the forum for additional help.

Q. I've just downloaded the game, but whenever I'm in a game, the game is very laggy... why? What can be done to reduce the lag?

A. It is known that 56k modems are able to support this game completely if the system the game is running on is capable. Most problems are caused by a lack of graphical processing power or a lack of RAM. You can reduce lag and some other problems by clicking 'File' then 'Game Options' in the game window and ticking all of the boxes on the right hand side (i.e. 'limit fps'). Changing your display properties to 16-bit colour instead of 32-bit colour may also help in some circumstances.

Q. When i try to connect to the lobby, I get an error message explaining that i have some sort of I/O problem. What is wrong?

A. This is a known problem, and sadly there is no known solution as of yet. It happens from time to time, all we can say is keep trying to reconnect, and you should be able to establish a connection after a few tries.

Q. When I try to refresh the server list, I get an I/O error. What can be done?

A. If this happens, then there is a problem with your current mirror. There are several mirrors to make sure you can keep playing. To use a different mirror, in the lobby window click options, mirror, and then select one of the other mirrors.

Q. Is there a minimum system requirements spec for Call of Combat?

A. Officially no, however there are some aspects which we are certain of. 56k modem users can certainly play this game with minimal lag up to 5v5 however, the game will 'lag' very badly if your graphics are on board. Ideally the system should have a minimum of 128megs of RAM, the CPU clock speed wont matter unless your computer is older than 5 years.

Q. Is there any particular graphics card you can recommend?

A. We suggest that the minimum spec gfx card you attempt to run this game on is a 32meg GeForce 2 Ti/64meg GeForce 4 MX. ATI cards ARE compatible with Call of Combat, however Nvidia cards run the game better.

Q. Does CoC run on Mac systems?

A. With the release of Java 1.4.1 for the Mac, and the availability of a gl4java port the game is now available to run on the mac. Details of how to set your computer up are provided below:

  • Firstly make sure you update your java version to 1.4.1 - This is done via the software update application in your system preferences. (N.B. if you are using OS X.3 or later you will have 1.4.1 pre-installed).
  • Next download the port of gl4java from here.
  • Once you have downloaded this you need to install it. To do this follow these steps.
  • Open the unzipped folder (probably named src)
  • Open the gl4java folder inside (should be the only one)
  • Open the MacOSX folder located inside
  • Inside that folder there is a file called howto 1.4.txt - instructions for installing are located in there. cd ~GL4Java/
    # install the png jar
    sudo cp MacOSX/png.jar /Library/Java/Extensions/
    # install the built gl4java.jar
    sudo cp MacOSX/build/gl4java.jar /Library/Java/Extensions/
    # install the built gl4java library
    sudo cp MacOSX/build/*.jnilib /Library/Java/Extensions/

This requires opening up your terminal located in the utilities section of your application folder and following out those commands. (N.B. You need root access to your computer to carry out these instruction.).
